Maritime education and training for ship’s officers is usually conducted at the age of 17 and above.

Candidates aspiring for a career in Marine Engineering under ATS conducted by CSSM should have the following educational background:

Maths and science ability, especially physics for engineers, is also normally required, though not necessarily at an advanced level since appropriate training normally forms part of the maritime education. However, English proficiency is increasingly important, as it is the language used by the industry.

Candidates, who are short-listed for Marine Engineering after selection procedures will undergo the three years training at CSSM. After the three years training, they write the M.O.T. Class-IV Pat “A” examination conducted by D.G.Shipping, Government of India to sail as Junior Engineers.
